Summary on Grant Application Form |
Porphyrins are aromatic macrocyclic dyes which occur in natural pigments such as chlorophyll and hemoglobin. They are characterised by unusually sharp electronic absorption bands in the visible region of the spectrum. This proposal concerns the synthesis of conjugated porphyrin oligomers, in which several porphyrins are linked together to form one giant electronically delocalised chromophore. The formation of a cojugated oligomer shifts the absorption bands of the porphyrin into the near infrared (NIR) spectral region and results in extraordinarynonlinear optical (NLO) and optoelectronic behaviour. We seek to synthesise porphyrin oligomers with yet stronger electronic conjugation, to shift the optoelectronic activity further into the infrared, and to understand the relationship between molecular structure and optoelectronic behaviour.
