Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this work is to produce mixed-anion oxysulfides and oxyphosphides which are expected to show unusual and/or useful electronic or magnetic properties. The different sizes and chemical behaviour of the two anions in these compunds means that they tend to segregate, often producing layered materials with oxide portions and sulfide or phosphide portions. The materials which are the subject of this proposal contain oxide portions with structures related to the perovskite structure which is common in oxide chemistry, and sulfide or phosphide portions with structures similar to those found in the much more covalent intermetallics. This work aims to bridge the gap between oxides and sulfides or oxides and phosphides in terms of transition metal oxidation states, bonding and electronic properties. Target materials have been chosen which are predicted to lie close to the transition between metallic and insulating behaviour.
