We propose to study the structure and dynamics of novel microporous organic/inorganic hybrid materials. We will study the effect of the arrangement and motion of the organic 'linings' of the internal surfaces of these solids on the mobility of adsorbed molecules. Our particular interest lies in the study of metal organophosphonates and dicarboxylates as well-defined solids of this kind. We will measure structure by X-ray and neutron diffraction and the mobility of organic groups by deuterium NMR, so that a significant part of the project will be to prepare fully deuterated solids that are amenable to these techniques. The aim of this work is to provide a physiochemical basis for applications of these new types of materials in adsorption technologies (chromatography, natural gas storage, seperation) and for choosing conditions for their use in catalytic applications. This work will complement the burgeoning field of synthetic studies in this area. In particular we expect these solids to possess complementary properties to those of the more conventional zeolites, and we expect novel selectivities in adsorption and catalysis.
