Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research aims to provide analytical and numerical description of interactions of optical solitary waves in models of practical and fundamental significance and in particular in devices with potential for all-optical storage and ultrafast processing of information.Considering each of the proposed schemes we will identify regions of existence of solitary waves and study spectra of the eigenvalue problems obtained by linearisation of the governing equations near an isolated soliton. Our primary research objective is then to use knowledge of isolated solitons and their spectra to build an approximate asymptotic theory of the dynamics of interacting solitons. This will enable us to predict conditions where soliton interaction becomes negligible, find critical distances where solitons form static or dynamic bound states, fuse, or give rise to complex periodic or chaotic regimes induced by interaction. Our distinctive approach to this problem is largely built on symmetry properties of the model equations. The entire research programme is based on models which describe current or planned experimental investigations in laboratories around the world. These provide sufficient information to focus solely on problems of current and future fundamental and technological relevance.
