Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project aims to carry out a fundamental combined catalysis and surface science study of supported gold catalysts. A range of redox reactions will be investigated:a. oxidation reactions including the partial oxidation of propene to propene oxide and low temperature CO oxidation andb. hydrogenation reactions involving unsaturated aldehydes and ketones. The aim is to investigate the nature of the active site for these catalysts and the elementary steps in the reaction mechanism using both continuous flow and pulse flow reactor methodologies. A particular approach to be adopted in these reactor studies will be the chemical trapping of intermediates using probe molecules. The nature of surface species and their reactivity will be studied using high pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy that is unique to us at Cardiff. The nature of the active sites and the metal support interactions of catalysts identified as being particularly selective will be characterised using in situ techniques and combined STM/XPS.
