The work is driven by the need to intensify gas separation plant for Oil & Gas extraction applications. Cyclonic separators have inherent advantages for separation of very fine droplets. The principal barrier to their implementation is the combination of a narrow operating range in respect to inlet drop size distribution, relatively low turn-down ratios and a lack of fundamental work to permit sufficient certainty in design to allow performance guarantees.This work will provide an experimental facility at Sheffield and promote a joint approach tomodelling work at both Sheffield and UMIST to generate fundamental understanding of the limits of performance of a range of axi-flow cyclones of potential interest in gas liquid separation applications. The work will focus on individual cyclone elements as well as overall separator design and will culminate in an industrial trial of a prototype designed on the basis of the test and modelling results.
