Summary on Grant Application Form
Bistable composite tubes provide a unique technology which allow open-section tubes to be flattened and then compactly stowed on a reel. This proposal aims to evaluate the potential for using this technology for pipelines by welding the overlapping free edges of the tub together. There are two key technical problems in the development of bistable composite pipelines; one is the basic design of the seam, the second is the ability to reliably weld this seam. These technical challenges are of course intimately linked, and both require fundamental research is bistable composite pipelines are to become a practical proposition. The funding requested by EPSRC is to enable Cambridge University to study the fundamentals of the joint design. In parallel, TWI will investigate suitable welding techniques. Later, the effect of welding on the joint strength, compared with theoretical, and laboratory manufactured 'perfect' joints will be evaluated.Although the research outlined here will concentrate on the particular application to bistable composite pipelines, the research will he highly relevant to the design of joints in any composite pipe, and will also have much wider application in the design of composite joints in any application.
