Prototyping in the image/multimedia domain is handicapped by the turnaround time experienced in running complex multi algorithm applications. Software engineers are frequently wedded to the familiar environment of desktop workstations and PCs. This environment is often not the target for high end applications, such as image coding, computer vision, and speech processing, as it cannot support real time performance. Therefore, presently a further implementation stage is required. This proposal would enable parallel prototyping of complex systems through high level software support. A software component, common in commercial settings, in our case would be the software equivalent of the co processor encapsulating common dynamic parallel processing structures regardless of granularity. The end user would be oblivious of the hardware actually used, and generic serial, shared and distributed memory solutions will be supported alongside drivers for more esoteric accelerating hardware. In particular, the software components will enable parallel prototypes to be assembled rapidly, allowing alternative structures to be explored. The component will encapsulate infrastructure necessary for prototyping in the form of: test data: a user library of common subroutines: and timings: which will allow performance costing of dynamic application behaviour.
