This is Project #8 of the collaborative research programme, PEGASUS Phase 2. The proposal takes an integrated approach to scaling of relationships between the petrophysical, geophysical and geochemical parameters of hydrocarbon reservoir rocks. A key objective of Project #8 is the petrophysical and mineralogical characterisation of cores of reservoir rocks from at least three Wells, the measurement of their seismic properties under simulated in-situ pressure conditions and the monitoring of the in-situ seismic properties from full-waveform sonic logs from the Wells. The novel scientific objectives of Project #8 are concerned with improving understanding of the mechanisms of seismic propagation in reservoir rocks to support the development of the scaling of the seismic/petrophysical relationships. The research will provide a framework of acoustic/petrophysical relationships by which the parameters determined within the other projects can be scaled to the reservoir. It will give insights into the scaling of seismic and petrophysical data for carbonates and unconsolidated sediments. Individual topics of research within Project #8 will be concerned with the seismic effects of wettability, the frequency- and spatial-scaling of shear wave attenuation and the scaling laws of seismic and petrophysical data in reservoir rocks in which the heterogeneity arises from fine-scale layering.
