We propose to design, build and test a 100kVA demonstration high temperature superconducting (HTS) synchronous generator. Growing interest in superconductivity in electric power and significant research funding are reported in several countries, including USA and Japan, and there is little doubt that the UK will be left well behind unless government support is provided to pursue this promising technology. Our team at Southampton has undertaken a number of industrially sponsored HTS projects and has achieved considerable success in measuring and modelling of ac losses and, most recently, in building and testing a 20kVA demonstrator HTS transformer. We feel strongly that the technology has matured sufficiently for a number of prototypes to be attempted and power generation appears to be one of the more promising applications. To save on costs we propose to use an existing stator and design and build a liquid-nitrogen/air cooled rotor with a rotating HTS winding. Careful field modelling will be required at the design stage to achieve the best performance from the anisotropic superconducting tape. A particular challenge will be to design entry points to the rotating cryostat. Test results will be used to produce a set of guidelines for future designs of HTS generators.EngProg\
