Solid state chemistry is characterised by the sue of high temperature reactions leading to thermodynamically controlled products. Many important oxides are however metastable, such as the 90K superconductor Yba2Cu307. The proposal aims to develop a new route, recently discovered by the principal applicant, using ionic hydrides (rather than hydrogen gas or electropositive metal getters) as reducing reagents for the topotactic removal of oxide anions from metal oxides. The metal hydrides have the twin advantages of being thermodynamically very powerful and kinetically fast reducing agents in solid-solid reactions (e.g. LaNi03 is reduced to La2Ni205 by hydrogen gas at 220C but by NaH at 120C). This new reactivity will allow the discovery of new phases with metals in unprecedented oxidation states in extended oxides, such as Co(I) in LaSrC003, and the opportunity to study the resulting unpredictable chemical andphysical behaviour. The hydride reagents will be applied to a carefully selected set of oxides to examine their capabilities. The synthetic work is complemented by a careful characterisation of the structures over all length scales and detailed study of the physical properties and electronic structure.
