The aim of the proposal is to develop and validate a MEMS based multi-sensor pressure probe capable of measuring three dimensional flows with a very high frequency response. The flow temperature will also be measured and the probe is expected to have a diameter of approximately 1mm. The work will be carried out in logical steps to maximise the chances of success at each stage and to guarantee the overall success of the project.The project starts with a review of the latest literature in the area of membrane based pressure probes and also temperature measurement. Because MEMS are to be used for the sensors, the probe surface must be flat and so not aerodynamically shaped as with conventional (for example 5-hole) probe designs. An aerodynamic investigation of flat probe heads will be carried out. This will include large scale experiments where detailed measurements can be made. CFD will also be a valuable tool in helping to design the experiments. Once all of the individual parts of the sensor have been proved to work effectively, the final sensor array will be manufactured and tested in research and industrial rigs.
