Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aims of the is project are 1) to synthesise optimised organosiloxane liquid crystals suitable for devices based on the ferroelectric and antiferroelectric properties of liquid crystals, 2) to synthesise and study new organosiloxane dichroic and fluorescent dyed bifunctional mesognes, 3) to synthesise new organosiloxane photonically ordered alignment layers, 4) to fabricate and optimise single and polariser free devices based on these new materials and 5) to incroporate and optimise the performance of these materials in flexible (i.e. plastic substrate) devices. The target properties of these materials are I) temperature invariant macroscopic properties (e.g. Ps and 0), ii) perfect bistability, iii) true microsecond switching for fields of <5V/um- at room temperature, iv) high order and v) mechanical stability. These properties will in turn lead to low power, wide viewing angle, complex passively addressed, high contrast and brightness, low cost, lightweight flexible displays and devices based on birefringent, dichroic and fluorescent optical phenomena. This work will be carried out in collaboration with Dow Corning (synthesis), and Cambridge, CRl, HP, IBM and Toshiba in the UK.
