Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project comprises the synthesis of adsorbed zeolites for second-harmonic-generation (SHG) applications, the dynamical characterisation of their guests and the testing of the SHG performance of each material. The dynamical characterisation will take the form of conventional and variable temperature (-196 to 600 C) and pressure (kilobars) FTIR spectroscopy and quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) experiments. The high temperature FTIR measurements will include in-situ studies of the desorption process of the zeolite guests. The SHG output will be tested via the Kurtz powder SHG technique at least under complementary ambient and variable temperature conditions. The variable pressure FTIR measurements are more exploratory. However, if significant differences in the dynamics with pressure are detected, corresponding variable pressure QENS measurements will be undertaken and suitable facilities for testing the SHG output in such an environment will be sought, either through collaboration or by constructing/adapting in-house apparatus. A structural dynamics/property relationship will thus be developed and will form a new facet to the well-known (static) structure/property relationships of NLO materials.
