The recognition of the future interconnect bottleneck by the American semiconductor chip manufacturers confirms the validity of our research, previously carried out under SCIOS and now being pursued with funding from various sources. This network will concentrate on the challenge of providing high aggregate bandwidth (e.g. THz) communication between silicon integrated circuits by means of optical and optoelectronic techniques. By assembling this Network we shall be able to initiate new research interactions between academics and with industry and, at the same time provide information and data to the companies most affected by these developments. Research of this nature is highly multidisciplinary, bringing together materials experts, semiconductor physicists, optics specialists, electronic engineers and computer scientists. It is therefore very important that we not only continue the interaction between the old SCIOS partners but also extend this network to include new groups capable of further enhancing the facilities and expertise at our disposal. In particular the new Network includes systems specialists in both the telecommunications and computing arenas.
