This fundamental research addresses the unsteady turbulent flow developing over a rectangular model enclosure, tested at transoinic speeds. The flow models the instability and the olarge amplitude pressure oscillations that are present in an open aircraft bay. These oscillations adversely affect aircraft attitude control, pressure drag, airframe fatigue life and pilot comfort. The research aims to develop an active control method for selected cavity flow.The design and development of the active instabioity control method is based on time dependent flow predictions from a Computational Fluid Dynamic baseline model, currently available at the University of Leicester. The numerical flow prediction is the test bed to design a simplified cavity flow model for control purposes. The approach is to design a simple single input/output model from the known cavity flow physics and calibrate it with the numerical predictions. A cavity controller is then obtained by system inversion. Advances in the cavity control model are sought in the second year of research by a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition analysis of the shear layer motion, which drives the flow instability.Finally a comparative analsyis is performed of the active control method versus passive cavity instability suppression methods, currently in use on aircract.
