Summary on Grant Application Form
This project is to evaluate novel mechanically-resonant sensors formed within a continuous length of optical fibre. These resonators will be produced by chemically etching away intermediate (hollow cylindrical layers of the fibre cladding to leave a thin core/cladding region supported by unetched regions of fibre. Point sensors will be formed by exploiting the variation in the flexural resonant frequency with stress, temperature or added mass. Means of optically activating the resonator will be investigated. The resulting vibrations will then be detected by the phase or intensity modulation of light travelling down the fibre resulting from the oscillation.
