Summary on Grant Application Form |
In systems built from off-the-shelf components, diversity (software fault tolerance) helps to achieve satisfaction dependability at acceptable cost. Support will be produced for the inclusion and assessment of diversity in the following ways.1. Techniques, based on information modelling, to assist in the analysis and resolution of design decisions for strucuring redundancy and achieving diversity (by guiding procurement of COTS items and development of bespoke items), information models will also be used to provide a structured approach to substantiate acceptance decisions based on claims of diversity.2. Techniques that allow systematic design and analysis of the wrapping of software which adds redundancy and diversity-specific properties (mainly fault containment and fault tolerance ones) to systems with COTS items and examine how general fault tolerance architectures and design structures can be applied for developing these systems.3. Techniques, based on mathematical models, to help the evaluator of such systems with the utilisation of disparate evidence and experience from past usage of components. Mathematicals models will also be used to provide advice for choosing and integrating COTS components into diverse systems.
