Pastes are two phase solid-liquid materials featuring high solids contents (akin to soils) which are important intermediates and/or products in the chemical and process industries. Control of extrusion, the usual forming method, is currently often poor and this programme aims to develop on-line control techniques for monitoring the presence of defect-causing phenomena in paste flows. Recent work by Amarasinghe and Wilson on batch extrusion tests demonstrated that appropriate signal processing techniques can be used to monitor the performance of ceramic paste extrusion processes. This programme aims to develop these techniques for continuous extrusion processes and explore their application to a range of paste systems. The Research Worker will develop codes and perform commissioning tests at Cambridge, and run experiments on continuous extruders at Birmingham.Later work will feature tests on non-ceramic systems and studies at a collaborator's factory. A parallel study will investigate the stress parameter observed in monitoring the fracture of ceramic pastes undergoing extrusion; this previously unreported feature appears to be related to fracture toughness.EngProg\
