Summary on Grant Application Form |
Cardiovascular diseases are the single most important cause of death in the UK. Their early diagnosis and treatment reduces mortality significantly and can improve the quality of life for patients. An important indication of cardiovascular diseases are abnormalities of cardiac motion and blood flow. This has led to considerable interest in quantifying both in order to aid the diagnosis and assessment of cardiovascular diseases. We propose to develop a system for the study of cardiac motion.and blood flow from cine MR images. To estimate cardiac motion we will develop intelligent non-rigid registration techniques which can be applied to image sequences to estimate soft tissue deformation.- Initially, these techniques will be applied to tagged MR images. Subsequently, we will apply these techniques to untagged MR images obtained by using the magnitude information from phase-contrast MR' images. At the same time, this will enable us to estimate cardiac flow using the phase information provided by phase-contract MR images. We will develop tools for the combined quantitative and qualitative analysis of cardiac motion and flow. The developed algorithms will be integrated and validated in a clinical demonstrator, and will be applied to study cardiac motion and flow in normals and patients.
