Summary on Grant Application Form
The research fellow will carry out computer calculations related to EPSRC funded experimental work on quantum dot laser structures grown at Nottingham Sheffield. The proposed topics are:1. Multiple radiative transitions. Ideally a quantum dot laser should operate entirely on its ground state: multipole transistions degrade its intrinsic threshold current and temperature dependence. Multiple transitions will be analysed taking account of inhomogeneous broadening due to size dispersion. Results will be compared with spontaneous emissin spectra as functions of temperature and ultimately gain-current curves will be produced.2. Above threshold behaviour. In quantum dots the processes of thermalisation and capture are not understood and such rate-limiting steps will have a serious effect on behaviour above threshold when the recombination rates become very fast, with consequences for the high power performance. The fellow will develop a description of these processes to enable the light-current curve to be calculated. The model will be verified using spontaneous emission spectra measured above threshold.3. Multimode behaviour. Quantum dot lasers show unusual multimode behaviour. The fellow will calculate the light output characteristics including longitundinal spatial hole-burning and coupling to substrate modes to obtain an accurate description of the multimode spectrum for comparison with data from experimental spectral studies.
