The rapid advances in laser technology have unearthed a wealth of new phenomena in atomic physics. Since atoms generally contain many electrons, the full theoretical description must take all the interactions into account. The necessity for this treatment is shown most dramatically in the probability for double ionization versus single ionization, which has been measured to be 6 to 12 orders of magnitude larger than could be expected from a single-active electron response.In this project we will develop an approach which describes the full dynamics of two electrons in a laser field of arbitrary strength. This is achieved by combining two state-of-the-art techniques, B-spline basis sets for accurate atomic structure calculations and R-matrix Floquet theory for multiphoton processes. We will extend B-spline basis techniques to enable the study of double photoionization processes.
