Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is concerned with the design of computer systems for creativity support. It seeks funding to continue a research programme consisting of investigations into the creativity uses of digital technologies. This began with an EPSRC funded feasibility project, COSTRAT: Computer Support for creative work: Artists and technologist in collaboration, EPSRC Grant No. GR/M14517. The work identified a number of questions as significant and requiring investigation. That feasibility study research provides a basis for this proposal. The selected focus for these studies is the visual arts, where originality is a critical concern and visual capabilities embodied in the new media afford significant opportunities for the generation of creative processes and to identify future requirements of computer support for creative works. The main aim of this two-year proposal is to develop the prior studies of artists in residence in order to investigate specific questions and to establish the generalisation necessary for modelling creative processes and to identify future requirements of computer support for creative work. Research questions to be addressed in this proposal have been derived from three independent reviews of the feasibility study data and with reference to the survey results. The results will constitute a rich source of evidence about the use of digital technology in creative work.
