Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Masters Training Package (MTP) offers a one year full-time modular MSc (Eng) programme in the Engineering Applications of Lasers. This serves the needs of the automobile, aerospace, biomaterials, electronics and general engineering sectors for personnel with expertise in the application of optical energy in engineering and manufacturing applications. Processes involved include laser based welding, cutting, microfabrication, drilling, marking, forming and cleaning. A primary objective is to produce a course wholly modular in the form of stand-alone one week modules in which there is strong industrial involvement both in the presentation of the course and in course attendance. Interactive CD-ROMs will also be produced of each module to form the basis of a distance learning option. The proposed MTP will have a flexibility of delivery and uptake that is not available in current courses in this area. There will be a good balance between the imparting of latest knowledge on laser processing technologies (including as required theoretical background on laser interactions with materials and mathematical modelling of laser based processes) and practical experience of laser processes. The training environment will be supported by our well-equipped laboratories and research experience gained in a substantial research project based on requirements of one of our industry sponsors.
