Summary on Grant Application Form |
Shape memory alloy and electrorheological/magnetorheological fluids will be applied to the creation of surfaces with a profile and mechanical properties which can be varied under computer control. The surfaces will also sense the application of finger pressure and movements across them. They will be linked to computers with an interactive visual capability so that, as in design, finger interaction with the interactive surface will cause it to deform in a certain way and, simultaneously, the visually displayed object will also change in a predictable manner. The proposal covers the creation and development of devices significantly in advance of anything currently available and also the ways in which these devices can be used independently or with visual feedback for a range of applications from engineering design and virtual reality through medical training and rehabilitation to sculpture and media.EngProg\
