Summary on Grant Application Form |
This is a completely new programme of work designed to explore the exciting new area of antiferroelectric liquid crystals with 45 degree cone angles. These are a new discovery (Chalmers group 1999) and provide the extraordinary possibility of a complete symmetry switch from oblate to prolate indicatrix ellipsoids. The device potential appears very high and a full understanding of the optical tensors of these materials needs to be quickly developed. We intend to collaborate with DERA (Malvern) and Hull (Professor J Goodby, who will supply materials) in the undertaking of a full optical characterisation of these new materials using our immensely powerful guided wave techniques. Cells will be fabricated of aligned antiferroelectric materials both with homeotropic geometry and the more conventional homogeneous. These will be optically characterised at several wavelengths in both the fully relaxed (unswitched) state and the fully unwound (switched) state. Because we now have enormous experience in the optical procedures involved this is an ideal opportunity for a research student. The primary funding request is therefore for just one such studentship.
