Summary on Grant Application Form |
With Professor Candela of University of Massachusetts (a recent visiting EPSRC visiting fellow in Nottingham), we have devised high field nmr experiments to be performed on He-3 in an Aerogel matrix. The call has been built in UMASS and will be installed in the Nottingham high field/ultra-low temperature facility. We will investigate the spin dynamics of the normal phase He-3 at 11.8 tesla and temperatures down to 2-3mK complimenting work done elsewhere at much lower fields. Preplating with He-4 will be used to modify the surface layer on the Aerogel. Investigations of the transverse and longitudinal relaxation will be performed in He-3 and saturated He-3/He-4 mixtures in order to study the effect of disorder on diffusion processes and the Leggettt-Rice effect. We also plan to study the behaviour of spin polarised dilute solutions in bulk and in the Aerogel and, at a somewhat lower fields (3T), superfluid He-3 in the Aerogel. The theory of the spin dynamics will be developed in parallel in order to analyse and interpret the results of the experiments.
