Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is to support a taught course in the topic of Learning from Data. Increasing amounts of data are being captured and stored electronically, and the aim of the course is to train computer-capable students to analyze, interpret and exploit such data using advanced techniques derived from the disciplines of machine learning, statistical modelling, pattern recognition and neural networks. The objectives are that students gain an understanding of these techniques, and learn when particular methods are suitable and/or applicable. These objectives will be developed through the use of taught modules and a 5 month practical project. Such techniques are important in both commercial/industrial environments and for scientific/engineering research. Having trained personnel in this area is of vital importance for UK commercial and scientific competitiveness.
