This fellowship will support optoelectronics research into tow new communications systems: optical signal processing and chaos communications. The Cross Field Device is a new type of multiple quantum well modulator developed by the proposed VF at the Defence Technology Organisation (Australia) as part of a project developing an optical analogue to digital converter.The fellowship would be used to perform high speed testing of devices manufactured in AlGaAs (operating at 850nm) and to extend the technology faster material systems at 0.92, 1.3 and 1.5 um. Further work will be used to investigate appropriate integration technologies.The semiconductor frequency modulated (FM) laser is unique among FM lasers studied to date in showing a modulation induced collapse of the coherence which limits the FM laser bandwidth. This fellowship aims to investigate the reasons for collapse of he coherence, to limit its effects using new technoloiges (semiconductor optical amplifiers and integrated devices) and to determine if this can provide a unique source for a secure communications system. There will be work investigating fibre FM lasers and applications to fibre FM modelocking.
