Summary on Grant Application Form |
The ability to generate new bone for skeletal use is a major clinical need. A promising approach to this healthcare issue is the development of tissue engineering protocols for de novo bone formation for skeletal repair. Specifically, the development of biomimetic materials that provide natural microenvironments for bone cell-matrix interactions thus mimicking, in part, the bone biological environment. This programme will develop and examine biodegradable biomimetic materials based on porous polymers that are osteoinductive due to incorporated bone growth factors, which will promote bone formation from human osteoprogenitors. The ability to enhance the osteoblast phenotype in vitro as assessed by specific markers and to stimulate bone formation in vivo, using robust animal models, will be examined. The research programme will build on the cell engineering, bone biology and biomaterials expertise of University Orthopaedics and Nottingham University. Generation of biomimetic osteoinductive scaffolds in combination with osteoprogenitors offers tremendous therapeutic potential for skeletal repair, which will undoubtedly reduce healthcare costs but, more importantly, have a positive impact on the quality of life for all.
