Summary on Grant Application Form
The MTP TIME aims to educate and train students and industry delegates to the emerging field of micro systems engineering. Microsystems engineering is in .a rapid expansion phase with a growth rate of 30% per annum. This enabling technology, of acute industrial significance, is not taught in British Universities, at MSc and undergraduate levels. A flexible mixed-mode method of delivery training package is being proposed, which seeks to meet the training demands of the micro-engineering industry. Distance-based learning material for pre- and post- course work is offered alongside one week-residential courses. This training package is to serve full-time, part-time and credit-bearing MSc students as well as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) course delegates. TIME aims to become the European standard training programme in micro-engineering.This training package draws upon the existing wide range of skills and considerable expertise in micro-engineering present within Heriot-Watt University's Engineering and Science Departments and will buy the expertise from the Electronics and Electrical Engineering of the three partner Universities (Glasgow, Strathclyde and Edinburgh), our National Centre of Micro-Engineering (Central Microstructure Facility, RAL) and the Institute for System Level Integration. The MTP TIME will be collaborating very closely with the similar proposal put forward by Cranfield University in order to reduce cost and ensure content uniformity and complementarity.
