Summary on Grant Application Form |
Our recently reported alkali metal induced Schlenk dimersation of P-substituted alkened to yield phosphorous-stabilised 1, 4-diide salts will be developed as a versatile route to a range of new alkali metal and lanthanide complexes, polyphosphines and related ligands. A wide range of P-containing alkenes will be synthesised and the steric and electronic factors governing their ability to minerise will be elucidated. The ability of the diide anions to act as [eta-3] 2 donors will be used in metathesis reactions to stabilise complexed of the lanthanides which can be viewed as analogues of ansa-metallocenes. The effects upon reactivity of the unusual coordination environment in Ln(II) complexes will also be studied. Reactions of the diides with electrophiles will give a range of otherwise inaccessible functionalised polyphosphines with versatile coordination behaviour (e.g. simultaneous chelation and bridging) and the solid state and solution structures and dynamics of their metal complexes will be studied. Many of the species synthesised (some of which will be chiral) will have considerable potential as reagents and/or catalysts in asymmetric organic synthesis. The project will extend understanding of heteroatom-stabilised carbanions and produce a wide range of novel P- and/or C-donor ligands and their complexes.
