This proposal concerns a new class of system which makes possible Deterministic Sea Wave Prediction (DSWP). DSWP is the prediction, typically up to 30 seconds ahead, of the future detailed shape of the sea surface, at a site of interest, typically for estimating ship motion. The Exeter Marine Dynamics Group have pioneered DSWP with extensive DPSRC/MOD support. Its consequences for predicting vessel motion considerably extend the envelope of operations in many Offshore Oil and Gas Industry and Navel roles. DSWP and the associated instrumentation also provides research tools for developing novel marine engineering systems and for basic sea-wave investigations. DSWP requires measurements of the shape of the sea surface remote from the place where predictions are needed. The sea data demands of a practical DSWP system are beyond the scope of existing wave measurement systems. For moving vessels and EPSRC/MOD funded feasibility study at Exeter has demonstrated the required instrument to be a scanning laser interferometer capable of remotely measuring at very shallow incidence directional wave-slope. Using the preparatory work it is proposed to develop such a system. Sea trials will test the systems use for both DSWP and for measuring spatial aspects of sea-wave propagation for oceanographic research.
