Summary on Grant Application Form |
Microwave induced plasma synthesis is an underdeveloped field that has wide potential application across solid state sciences. The proposed research is focused on the synthesis of transition metal nitrides and oxynitrides from transition metals and their oxides exposed to reactive nitogenous plasmas. Initially the microwave plasma apparatus will be constructed based on a modified domestic microwave oven design. Subsequently samples will be exposed to a dynamic plasma flow of either dinitrogen, dinitrogen/hydrogen, or ammonia. Products will then be characterised with a combination of electron microscopy, powder x-ray diffraction and magnetometry. Products will be tested for catalytic activity toward hydrodenitrogenation, hydrodesulfurisation and cracking/isomerisation of hydrocarbons. Trends between synthetic parameters such as flow rate, gas pressure, reaction time and precursor morphology will be analysed as a function of product composition, catalytic activity and morphology. The electronic and magnetic properties of phase pure materials will also be studied.
