Summary on Grant Application Form |
This programme follows on from early work at Susses which developed a full quantum mechanical description of the superconducting weak link ring and predicted a quantum dual to the Josephson effect based on pair charge localisation at the weak link. Experiments demonstrated the existence of such a 'charge mode' regime of behaviour and much research worldwide has focussed on the related, quasi-classical, phenomena of Coulomb blockade and Bloch oscillations in both superconducting and low dimensional semiconducting circuits. Meanwhile, at Sussex, enormous strides have been made in experimental technique and theoretical understanding of the flux mode regime of weak link ring behaviour. It is now timely to apply these improved techniques, and the specific method of reactive monitoring, to charge mode weak link ring circuits, with the aim of further understanding and exploiting the full underlying behaviour of these macroscopic quantum mechanical systems.
