Summary on Grant Application Form |
Living organisms make lipoic acid by a very direct route, using a reaction that would be difficult to achieve with synthetic chemistry. In order to understand the underlying chemistry of the biological process, we will examine the biochemical machinery of the cell and identify the protein components required for the transfer of sulphur from a simple precursor to form lipoic acid.
