When light is incident on a dielectric particle with dimensions much smaller than the radiation wavelength, it can be scattered via Rayleigh scattering. Recent theoretical work has predicted that a dense collection of such particles can scatter light collectively and coherently via the spontaneous generation of large amplitude density gratings in the collection of particles. This Collective Rayleigh Scattering (CRS) process is a new and exciting phenomenon in the physics of classical scattering. The research described in this proposal has two main aims. The first is to carry out a detailed theoretical study of CRS including effects which may be significant in a CRS experiment e.g. the effect of an optical cavity, pulse propagation and diffraction. The second is to perform preliminary experimental studies of dielectric particulate media in vacuo. The ultimate goal of the combined theoretical and experimental studies is the design of a proof-of-principle experiment for the first observation of CRS.
