The detection of low levels of biological material is a very important problem in pollution detection, medicine and sensing generally. To be able to identify single pathogenic particles quickly and effectively is a primary target of such work. Preliminary studies have shown us that by using surface plasmon light scattering it is possible to visualise a very samll number of large particles by immobilising them on a surface plasmon supporting surface. The absorbed particles strongly scatter the surface plasmon into radiation which is readily detected above the metal surface. We now wish to put these observations on a firm footing by undertaking a detailed experimental study of controlled systems from which results will be obtained to compare with model theory predictions which will also be produced as part of this study. As in the experimental side we have already undertaken preliminary work and developed model codes for light scattering at a prism fluid interface. We now wish to establish, and experimentally confirm, new codes for scattering on a surface plasmon supporting surface. These studies will then allow optimisation of sensor design for single particle detection.
