|
The aim of the research is to evaluate the relative merits of a wide range of measures available to policy makers and initiatives available to companies that could help to improve the distribution of goods in urban areas in the UK. Those policy measures and company initiatives that appear to have the greatest merit will be analysed in detail in terms of their scope to make urban distribution operations more efficient, less expensive and more environmentally sustainable. The project team will work closely with policy makers from local authorities and distribution company representatives to model the effects of the policy measures and company initiatives on distribution operations. The project will also examine the extent to which specific policy measures and company initiatives are likely to lead to similar or different operational, efficiency and environmental outcomes in three different urban areas in the UK (namely Birmingham, Norwich and Winchester). The importance of the economic vitality and competitiveness of urban areas (in terms of possessing reliable and cost-effective goods flows) as well as environmentally sustainable (in terms of goods vehicle activity) will be central to the project.
