Summary on Grant Application Form
Very high efficiency thermo-photovoltaic cells are desirable because of their increased power output. The greater expense incurred by their complexity is offset by their use of concentrated radiation. They also explore the physics for future photovoltaic applications. This proposal aims to investigate some of the practical limits of PV technology with respect to optimal photon adsorption and carrier separation and collection. The theoretical work will consist of a quantitative study of adsorption in graded band gap structures; investigation of the means of carrier separation and collection in such structures to advantage (by using an the Hall effect, or using internal vertical p-n junctions). The experimental work will consist of Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposition of tunnel unction tandem cells (GaSb/InAs) to produce useful TPV cells; growth of graded band gap structures in GaInSb; application of the most promising method of carrier separation to produce trial higher efficiency TPV cells with enhanced open circuit voltage. The project will generate useful interim deliverables and conclude with a route to a record efficiency TPV cell and potentially a route for very high efficiency cells that circumvent two of the fundamental limits that have restricted PV efficiency.EngProg\
