Summary on Grant Application Form |
Granular materials display a wide range of interesting physical phenomena which are not well understood and which adversely affect their processing and handling in a number of industries. The proposed programme will relate the microscopic (single particle) dynamics to the macroscopic behaviour of model granular materials undergoing rapid flow using two advanced techniques: high speed digital photography with automated image processing (to provide wholefield position and velocity data on 2-D systems), and a newly-installed positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) facility (to provide pointwise data on 3-D systems). Such experiments provide direct measurements of the spatial distribution of packing fraction, granular temperature, mean velocity, and self-diffusion coefficient which are vital to the validation of current kinetic theories of rapid granular flow. Results from two experimental geometries (vibro-fluidized beds and shear cells), operated under a range of systematically-controlled boundary conditions, will be compared with predictions from recently proposed numerical and analytical models. The microscopic origins for the onset of convection rolls in vibro-fluidized beds will be determined, and the extension of PEPT to the measurement of the spin contribution to granular temperature will be demonstrated for the first time.EngProg\
