The aim of this programme is to develop novel composite materials that present appropriate catalytic, electronic, ionic, thermal, structural and chemical properties. The methodology will involve preparing appropriate mixtures or precursor compounds, testing these in air under typical PEN structure fabrication regimes and then testing under fuel conditions, using x-ray and electron microscopy techniques and dilatometry to follow the chemical and structural changes. material combinations that display appropriate chemical and mechanical stability will then be prepared as composites, and the electrical, catalytic, microstructural and long term stability performances investigated. Composite electrodes will be applied to zirconia electrolytes and their half-cell electrochemical performances investigated in atmospheres containing hydrogen or methane or mixed hydrocarbon fuels. Work will focus upon the development of cermets containing titania substituted zirconia and transition metal perovskite composites. Choice of initial composition will be utilised to optimise microstructure, so as to minimise cracking activity, whilst maintaining good electrical conductivity.EngProg\
