Summary on Grant Application Form |
In vertical gas-liquid channel flow, a number of regimes occur, including bubbly flow, churn flow, slug flow and annular flow. In the annular flow regime, when the liquid mass-flux is high, a further characteristic phenomenon develops, namely the formation of structure in the droplet-laden core of the flow. These structures have a wispy-appearance , hence the name wispy annual flow for this type of flow. Wispy annual flow is of considerable industrial importance, but is very poorly understood. Work carried out under a previous EPSRC grant (GR/J 52426) confirmed the existence of these core structures, but their detailed nature and behaviour remains a mystery. The key feature of the present proposal is the inclusion of a much wider range of measurements of fluctuating system parameters. In parallel with the experimental work, theoretical models will be developed for the onset and for the characteristics of wispy annual flow. These will build on those already developed in the previous study, with the aim of providing predictive capability in an area where there are currently greater uncertainties.EngProg\
