Summary on Grant Application Form |
All structures exhibit vibration damping, but despite a large body of literature on the subject, damping remains one of the least well-understood aspects of vibration analysis. The aims of the project are to provide tools for the identification of damping in complex structures, and to improve understanding of the influence of damping in pneumatic tyres on the overall dynamics of ground vehicles. This will be achieved by a novel experimental procedure of testing, based on experimental modal analysis and recent theoretical developments in structural dynamics. A general procedure for the identification of damping in structures and for quantifying all relevant damping parameters from measurements will be developed and implemented. Damping models in pneumatic tyres will be revealed by this approach in conjunction with detailed finite element simulations. The tyre damping models will be used for vehicle simulations in order to provide sufficient insight into energy losses and tyre vibrations. Although the investigation is based on pneumatic tyres, progress in the general area of structural damping would be of major benefit in all those fields where vibration is important, such as aircraft, ship and car design.
