Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this programme is to conduct a fundamental investigation into human movements in order to create a natural movement library for an existing constraint based human manikin model. Currently the manikin model can find solution routes that the human cannot perform. The purpose of this research is to establish the objectives for intermediate actions that occur throughout such human movements and incorporate these into the model.Up to 30 subjects will be videotaped whilst performing tasks requiring human-machine interactions, such activities as sit-to-stand, walking (to reach controls), reaching for objects whilst standing and reaching whilst seated. Data from videotapes will be translated into a three dimensional reconstruction of 14-segment human model in the compute. The reference data captured from the human tasks will be compared to the patterns of the manikin model. Consequently, additional constraints will be programmed into the manikin and a natural movement library for selected actions will be developed to support a range of human-machinery interaction design processes. The Design Group at the University of Bath has over a number of years established a close working relationship with the packaging industry who are keen to apply these techniques to their industrial problems.
