Summary on Grant Application Form
A tactile stimulator for the hand will be developed, with a contactor array at each fingertip and at the thumb. The stimulator will have the capability to produce a wide range of touch stimuli with spatiotemporal variation over the skin surface, evoking virtual sensations of surface features or surface texture. Provision will be made for active exploration of virtual tactile environments, with movement of the stimulator under user control. Different strategies for software representation of tactile surfaces will be investigated, and subject testing will be used to determine how virtual objects by the stimulator are identified and discriminated.
