Summary on Grant Application Form |
Synthetic chemistry is a major activity within the School of Chemistry, a discipline which is highly dependent upon ready access to a range of spectroscopic facilities for compound characterisation. This proposal deals with urgent upgrading of our mass spectrometry facilities especially in regard to the acquisition of accurate mass measurements on molecular ions and fragments. As such measurements are essential during the characterisation of new compounds produced by chemical synthesis, it is anticipated that the provision of this new instrument will greatly enhance a variety of existing and future organic, inorganic and materials programmes.Specific research programmes that will benefit include:(i) Total synthesis of complex natural products (amythiamycin A, azinomycins, ficellomycin, manzamines).(ii) New synthetic methods (methyleneaziridines, chiral oxime ethers, chiral dirhodium catalysts, anionic cyclisations).(iii) Materials and Coordination Chemistry (Metallomesogens, Biaxial Nematic Liquid Crystals).(iv) Supramolecular Chemistry and Sensing (receptors for neutral molecules, DNA bases and amino acids; photochemical molecular logic gates).
