Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Solar City project aims to link dynamic (half hourly) building electrical energy use prediction models to a detailed model of the local electrical energy supply network in order to provide a powerful planning tool. This will enable the impact of an increased use of solar energy on the electricity network (in particular local voltages and currents) to be predicted. The project will focus on detailed urban modelling to assist with siting BiPV and predicting the embedded electricity production by BiPV. The displacement of electrical energy use by, in particular solar water heating, but also passive solar design and daylighting (associated with artificial lighting controls) will also be considered.A GIS interface will be developed to provide a user-friendly interface to the software and this will be made available within the project for evaluation by the commercial collaborators. It will be used to predict the physical and economic effects of solar systems on the electrical network in an urban area. Different solar systems scenarios will be explored. The project will establish the value of such software for city energy planning, both by local authority employees and electrical power system planners.
