Summary on Grant Application Form |
The development of a new wave energy converter has suggested that original numerical and experimental contributions could be made to the fundamental case of a long horizontal cylinder at the water surface in waves. Numerical methods will include linear three dimensional wave diffraction solutions in both frequency and time domains, and the formulation and implementation of a new non-linear unified slender-body method. The numerical methods will be applied to modelling the wave forces and motions of an articulated cylinder using dynamic code from the project's industrial partner. Experiments will be carried out on an articulated scale model, again supplied by the industrial partner, in a 3-D wave basin and a large 2-D flume over a range of wave and mixed sea conditions including extreme waves up to the breaking limit. Model variables will include stiffness and damping. Measurements will be made of the model joint angles, the body and mooring forces and the surrounding water surface elevation. The work will assemble a high quality knowledge-base for long horizontal cylinders in waves over the range of scale ocean conditions, and will have both specific application on the present wave energy device, and generic applications for marine structures in the ocean surface.EngProg\
