Summary on Grant Application Form |
The recognition of pedestrians in real-time is a very demanding application because of the difficulty in accurate segmentation in cluttered road scenes and because of the variability of the profiles exhibited by people. Our current segmentation methods for NIR and FIR images rely upon appropriate thresholding. We will improve this approach by considering techniques using the apparent relative motion of individuals in the foreground of the scene (this is possible because of the motion of the vehicle) and by the use of distance and velocity information available from radar imaging.Recognition methods based on shape descriptors will be developed. These will include Truncated Fourier methods and PCM approaches, coupled with Neural Net and Bayesian algorithms. preliminary work has shown that this approach is reasonably accurate, but can be slow.A key part of this work is to assess the requirements for automotive applications and the increased reliability which can be obtained by using these methods to analyse images from infra-red and radar sensors.
